I recently had the opportunity to review both HTC VIVE Pro and HTC VIVE Cosmos Elite, two of the most popular PC VR headsets currently on the market. Both models boast great specs, with 110° field of view, 90Hz refresh rate and room scale tracking capabilities that offer a premium VR experience. As far as resolution goes, however, there is an improvement in the Cosmos Elite over the Pro - boasting 1440 x 1700px compared to just 1440 x 1600px in the Pro. The minimum CPU requirement for both models is Intel Core i5-4590 but there is a slight difference when it comes to GPU requirements - whereas GeForce GTX 1060 is recommended for Pro users; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB (or AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB equivalent) are recommended for those using Cosmos Elite.
So which model offers better value for money? Based on my personal experience using them both, I’d say that HTC VIVE Cosmos Elite offers more features than its predecessor and at a lower price point. Its improved resolution means higher quality visuals than what you get from the HTC Vive Pro and its minimum graphics requirement makes it compatible with much cheaper GPUs compared to what’s required by its predecessor. It also comes bundled with controllers so you don’t have to pay extra for them as you do with Vive Pro – although both come with external base stations that allow six degrees of freedom motion tracking.
In conclusion, while I enjoyed my time spent testing out both models – if I had to choose one it would definitely be the HTC VIVE Cosmos Elite due to its superior resolution and compatibility with cheaper graphics cards making it more accessible than its predecessor; not to mention the fact that it comes bundled with controllers!
