Flimsy, buggy, uncomfortable, and unsightly – LG’s 360 VR headset seems intent on ruining virtual reality for everyone.

One VR experiment that just doesn't quite work

It’s shame that we’re testing the 360 VR just after Google has outlined its bold vision for its Android-powered VR platform, Daydream, of which LG is a smartphone partner. The only people who should consider buying the 360 VR are G5 owners. If you’re one of them, save yourself a lot of money and get a decent Cardboard viewer while you wait for Daydream ready phones and headsets to launch this autumn.

LG's first VR headset is virtually unusable

While LG's approach has merit from a comfort standpoint -- Samsung's Gear VR is clunky to wear in comparison -- the 360 VR just doesn't do what it needs to do in order to convincingly transport me into another reality. I want to be swept away and forget about the real world for a while, and the 360 VR simply fails in this endeavour.

Overall, the 360 VR feels all kinds of half-baked. The construction isn't as solid as we'd expect, and the headset raises some extremely valid concerns when it comes to comfort and even practicality.

I really don’t have much more to say about this device. It’s just…bad. It feels like a lower end VR piece like the Google Cardboard. It can handle still 360° images well, but when it comes to anything more, it completely falls off a cliff. Had it been cheaper, it might have been worth it. As it is, don’t waste your time with the LG 360 VR.

LG’s first stab at virtual reality gets off to a very fuzzy start

The 360 VR is light, small and unobtrusive, and using the G5 to navigate is comfortable. If sharpness issues can be resolved, if more apps and games are thrown into the fray, and if the price drops massively, then it might be a solid alternative for G5 owners. But that’s a big ask. For now, the 360 VR remains a curiosity – a half-baked, rushed attempt to join the VR party – and it’s a crying shame.
